We are very fortunate to have a specialist PE teacher and some fantastic sports facilities at the PRS, including a small sports hall, a gym containing industry standard Technogym equipment and a large outdoor sports area. Full time pupils enjoy two lessons of PE per week and take part in sporting fixtures with other educational establishments whenever possible. Additional sports activities are organised for part time pupils such as indoor climbing at Harrogate Climbing Centre.
We are also fortunate to have some highly qualified and experienced staff with a range of outdoor sports qualifications and a well stocked store of outdoor equipment. Pupils take part in programmes of climbing, kayaking, caving, mountain biking, orienteering, hillwalking and team building as part of curricular and extra curricular activities. During the summer months, pupils look forward to kayaking on the local canal and pupils and staff take on the challenge of walking up their own keyworker group hill: Ingleborough, Whernside, Penyghent or Yarlside.
Our PE and Outdoor Education programmes help to develop the self confidence, self reliance and self awareness as well as improving fitness and well being. Pupils are encouraged to take on new and exciting challenges. The skills pupils learn can be used to tackle the problems they meet in everyday life, e.g. problem-solving, teamwork, communication skills, etc.
Students take part in a variety of activities for a block of time, so that they can develop their skills and understanding of the activity. Activities include badminton, basketball, football and circuit training in school. When possible students also have the opportunity to use local facilities to play badminton (on a full size court), squash and tennis.
