Cookery is about learning how to follow a recipe and being introduced to new flavours and ingredients. At the PRS students have the opportunity to learn how to cook simple dishes which they would be able to make at home. Students have the chance to make savoury and sweet dishes and, where possible, use ingredients that are in season. Within the lessons, students also gain experience of visiting the local supermarket to source ingredients for the dishes to be cooked.
At KS3, students gain experience of simple techniques needed to make such things as cakes, pies and chilli. These skills are used to help prepare for the MacMillan Great Big Coffee Morning, which the PRS supports each year.
At KS4, students have the opportunity to gain the BTEC Level 2 qualification in home cooking. This involves them preparing, cooking and presenting a two course meal. During their lessons, the students learn more complex techniques and develop their abilities to produce dishes independently. This enables them to successfully produce their own two course meals at the end of the course.
